THE FAMILY OF WILHELM AND THERESIA WESTHUES IN 1896, FOUR YEARS AFTER THE IMMIGRATION TO AMERICA From left: Joseph, William G., Theodore, Wilhelm (father), Theresia, Theresia (mother) holding baby John, Mary, Henry, Ben. One suspects that the photo was intended mainly for relatives back in Germany, to show how successfully Wilhelm and Theresia had settled into their adopted homeland. The house overpowers the people. Leaves on the trees would obscure it in summer, but not on this winter's day. The children are well and warmly clothed. Relatives back home must surely have been impressed.
